While some may dismiss fleas as simple pests, for a pet infested with them, it can become lethal quickly. Another common misconception is believing our pets cannot get fleas if they are completely indoors or only go outside to use the bathroom, but fleas can land on anything or anyone outside and be brought into the house. They thrive in the well-regulated temperature of our homes and will turn into an infestation quickly if not treated thoroughly.
Ticks are becoming much more common, even outside wooded areas! The main kinds Ontario has are deer ticks, American dog ticks, brown dog ticks and lone star ticks. Gulf coast ticks are also common when travelling to the southern states. Deer ticks are the ones to especially keep an eye out for, as they are the ones that commonly carry Lyme disease. Some prevention will still allow a tick to bite your pet, so make sure to always scan for ticks when your pet comes inside.
Heartworm is transferred through the bite of a mosquito and can lead to deadly consequences for our pets. Other worms, such as round, hook, and whip mostly come from eating things that should not be eaten, such as deceased rodents or stool and tapeworm is transmitted through fleas. All puppies and kittens will have worms when they are born, so it is highly suggested that you purchase dewormer with your little one’s first set of vaccines.
